“And The Lord Visited Sarah” Says Genesis 21:1. What Does That Mean?

The Bible is amazingly full of words that convince God’s people that HE is sovereign over the womb business!

Hello Westboro,

 I hope you are well.

Please can you clarify the meaning behind Genesis 21:1-2: “And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.” My question is: what did God do unto Sarah? Can you please clarify the context behind this passage for me.

 I am anticipating your response

Good morning, Chad –

The God who OWNS the womb, from whom all things flow, and by whom all things exist, The Creator Of All Things Seen And Unseen – opened Sara’s womb. That’s what He did at Genesis 21:1. Until Sarah was 90 years old, GOD closed up her womb. But the important point here is that GOD gave Abraham and Sara faith, and, God worked in them to believe! For that reason ONLY, they had faith and they did believe. God also worked in Sarah to give her strength to deliver that son!

Please consider these words from Holy Writ about God controlling the womb business:

Genesis 20:17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children. 18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham’s wife.

Genesis 29:31 And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. 32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

Genesis 30:2 And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?

Genesis 30:22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:

Deuteronomy 7:13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

Judges 13:3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. 4 Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: 5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

1 Samuel 1:5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. 6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. … 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. 20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

Please also read Luke chapter 1. These are but a tiny portion of the wonderful and amazing words that convince any who can hear and receive these words to know that God is sovereign over ALL—including the womb business! Further, not so much as a breath is drawn or a hair falls from a single head or a blink of any eye happens or a star falls or a tree grows a single leaf that was not appointed by the Lord your God! Therein is great comfort and peace and safety!

Thank you for writing.
