Doesn’t Scripture Agree With Billy Graham That Righteous Non-Christians Get To Heaven, Too?

Dear Westboro Baptist Church,

Regarding the scripture:

Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Another way to interpret verse 12 is: “it’s true that people can only be saved through Jesus, but if someone is a good person but does not know Christ, then it might still be possible for that person to be saved, but then only through Christ’s mercy.”

I believe that Billy Graham was correct in saying that only God knows whether or not righteous non-Christians can be saved. Of course, you’re entitled to your opinion, as well.

Regards,

Brian.

Dear Brian,

We say with Jesus Christ at Matthew 22:29: “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”

You do not get to impose your ideas onto that passage. The whole body of Scripture must be brought into focus as all of Scripture agrees with itself in a beautiful symphony of plain words.

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:20-21)

“And [Jesus Christ] said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (Mark 16:15-16)

Preach whose Gospel? Christ’s Gospel. If you don’t believe Christ’s Gospel, then you are damned.

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

You should not shorten the arm of God in His work of getting His word into the ears of His elect people, and His command that they hear and believe, with your silly notions about what you think is right, when it flies in the teeth of the plain words of Scripture.

Further, there is no righteousness outside of Christ. In fact, there are no good people, period!

“They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” (Romans 3:12)

If you do not have the righteousness of Christ, you have nothing.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
